iLive - Flexible, Highly Configurable Digital Mixing System
There are no less than 7 models to choose from. The Surface is simply a controller for the MixRack, a big mouse as some would say. It also has an audio rack built into it to conveniently provide local inputs and outputs at the mix position. These are not processed in the Surface but sent to/from the MixRack via a digital snake. The Surface features a large analogue style, one control per function processing block, TouchScreen, name and colour virtual ‘write-on’ strip, banks of motorized faders with independent layers, SoftKeys, built-in headphones, local monitor and talkback. Choose the Surface model according to number of faders, size, I/O and networking flexibility required. The four modular iLive Surfaces allow a variety of audio I/O options, Port B network and redundant power supply options, and can be shipped in a touring grade flight case. The two iLive-T models offer similar functionality in a lower cost, lighter weight chassis with fixed format I/O, but without Port B, redundant power or flight case options. The iLive-R72 provides an ultra-compact rack mountable solution.
ZED 16 FX
British mixer manufacturers Allen & Heath have launched a new product in their ZED range, designed specifically for studio users. Although it looks very much like the other mixers in the ZED series, which are aimed more at the live user, the new desk has a number of features for controlling a DAW.
ZED 18
These features make the ZED R16 incredibly versatile. For example, the mixer can be set up so that all 16 channels go to the DAW pre- or post-EQ, while monitoring the DAW track signals with the faders, then with just a few button presses, the mixer can be transformed into a 16-channel mixdown console possibly using the EQ on the mix, or a DAW controller if mixing in the digital domain. Look out for the SOS review in coming months.
